The CISCO Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices (ICND) Part I exam tests a candidate's knowledge and skills required to successfully install, operate, and troubleshoot a small branch office network. The Second exam (ICND Part II) validates your ability to successfully install, operate, and troubleshoot a small to medium-size enterprise branch network. Candidates for the CCNA can qualify for the certification by passing one test, 200-125 (CCNA), or two tests, 100-101 (ICND 1) and 200-101 (ICND2).

The ICND1 tests your knowledge and skills required to successfully install, operate, and troubleshoot a small branch office network. The exam includes topics on the operation of IP data networks, LAN switching technologies, IPv6, IP routing technologies, IP services (DHCP, NAT, ACLs), network device security, and basic troubleshooting
ICND2...
The ICND2 tests your knowledge and skills required to successfully install, operate, and troubleshoot a small to medium-size enterprise branch network. The exam includes topics on LAN switching technologies, IP routing technologies, IP services (FHRP, syslog, SNMP v2 and v3), troubleshooting, and WAN technologies.

In Britain, the average wage for a ICND is £34,800 pa. The average salary for a ICND graduate is around £21,600 pa. The CISCO: ICND Training Package is the latest generation in Cisco ICND technology and as such there is no current retirement plan for its exams. Below is a breakdown of the exams for this certification and how they are made up.

This exam measures your ability to accomplish the topic listed:

ICND1 100-101 - Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1
The 100-101 Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1 (ICND1) is the first step in achieving the CCNA certification. This exam tests a candidate's knowledge and skills required to successfully install, operate, and troubleshoot a small branch office network. The exam includes topics on the Operation of IP Data Networks; LAN Switching Technologies; IP Addressing (IPv4 & IPv6); IP Routing Technologies; IP Services (DHCP, NAT, ACLs); Network Device Security; Basic Troubleshooting. The Exam topics are listed below:
- 1.0 Operation of IP Data Networks (5%)
- Recognize the purpose and functions of various network devices such as Routers, Switches, Bridges and Hubs
- Select the components required to meet a given network specification
- Identify common applications and their impact on the network
- Describe the purpose and basic operation of the protocols in the OSI and TCP/IP models
- Predict the data flow between two hosts across a network
- Identify the appropriate media, cables, ports, and connectors to connect Cisco network devices to other network devices and hosts in a LAN
- 2.0 LAN Switching Technologies (20%)
- Determine the technology and media access control method for Ethernet networks
- Identify basic switching concepts and the operation of Cisco switches.
